The White Whale: A Stranger in Harvard — Le Corbusier, Josep Lluís Sert, and the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts

Harvard, 1959: red brick, tradition – and suddenly, Le Corbusier.
The Stranger at Harvard tells the remarkable story of the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts, Le
Corbusier’s only building in North America, and of Josep Lluís Sert, the Spanish architect in exile and
Harvard GSD dean who helped bring it into existence.
Combining an illustrated lecture with a small installation of contemporary photographs of the
Carpenter Center taken by the speaker, the event explores architecture as a story of migration,
cultural exchange, identity, and belonging.
Once a radical stranger within historic Harvard, the Carpenter Center is now one of its modern icons.
